Getting into metal detecting is easier now more than ever. There a number of reasons why you should consider practicing metal detecting as a hobby. Some even like it so much that they think of ways to make money from it.

I heard a bout a guy that lives near a beach. He loved running up and down the beach in the sand for exercise. As he’d normally run barefoot, one day while running he hit something hard and it made him stop and take a look. Low and behold it was an object of value. Hence he now is an avid metal detector.

His practice of metal detecting is conducted exclusively at the beach and resort type establishments. When he goes on holiday anywhere he always chooses a beach or resort surrounded by H20. The water is a really magnet for him. Reason being is that he pays to go on vacation there but when he leaves invariably he is always in profit.

Why?

Because these tourist resorts are just a treasure trove filled with tons of valuable stuff that people lose. His biggest catches have included diamond rings, wedding bands, expensive watches and believe it our not cold hard currency. Both US dollars, Euros and many other currencies.

When you shop for a metal detector the price range for the hobbyist will appear large. I always recommend that new detectors consider a used metal detector. There are just far too many good used devices on the market to pass up a good deal for those starting out and may not know if they will continue with this hobby.

If you are just bent on getting a new machine. It will pay you to research well. One thing I think you’ll find in your research is that the technology has not changed very much. I mean metal and the detecting of metal has not been leaped forward. Its all still using the same basic receiver and transmitting of signals has remained the same.

One step forward has been the ability to package the devices up and make them look really sleek and cool. This can only be offset by the weight differential. You’ll want to ensure that your device weighs no more than 8 to 10 pounds. Any more than that and your arms and neck with get very tired. When that happens this will appear to be more like work that a hobby.

There is a pretty big price range for metal detectors for metal detecting hobbyist. If you do not have a metal detector already and are not sure if metal detecting is something that you will take up long term you may want to consider getting a used metal detector.

You can typically find a used metal detector in good shape for reasonable price. When purchasing a used metal detector take into consideration the name in the manufacture and if there is any warrantee available.

If you are going to purchase a brand-new metal detector you can get information online and can do the cost comparisons. Call the individual manufacturers of metal detectors and speak with someone and let them know the type of applications that you be using the metal detector for, they should be able to help you out and recommend what model is best for you.

After speaking with two or three of the manufacturers and getting the best recommendation you can do some cost comparisons to see will work best for you.

Not all metal detectors are created equal and because of this you need to take in consideration the areas you will be metal detecting. Choosing the correct metal detector for your application will be crucial to your success and long-term use of the metal detector. There are a lot of forums on the Internet for metal detectors, if you go and join a couple and tell the forums, tell them that you are new to metal detecting some the more seasoned veterans will be more than happy to help you choose a piece of equipment that is right for you.

As you start out metal detecting it is an exciting experience, when first getting started just make sure you follow these tips and to increase your chances for success.
